i say true. at least for myself. i don't know any deadheads in real life, but all of us here seem to be pretty hardcore fans. there must be some people out there who were deadheads at one time, who just aren't anymore for whatever reasons. discuss.

For me anyway it is hard to answer definitively. Following my last show at Desert Sky Pavillion here in Phoenix (Jerr looked and sounded like he might keel over and die on the spot) I kind of drifted away. None of the folks I hung and worked with had ever been into their music. As a result I really stopped listening and even gave my tape collection away to an elderly Head who appeared at one of my garage sales one Spring afternoon. My "reawakening" came when two significant events occurred: 1. Getting DSL for the PC, and 2. Stumbling across this website by pure chance. Since that time my inner Head has come back full force and I have been immersed in the music once again, perhaps even more now than before given the immense amount of music available at the click of the mouse. So was I ever "not" a Head? Hard to say, maybe it's better to say that my Head-ness was just dormant for a period of time; but I feel it was always lurking in the background, waiting for the time it could come out of its coma and begin to annoy my wife again. She is soooooo happy that day came.

Oh, and you slept with my Grandma AND my Ma? Then I guess it is possible we are related. But don't expect anythin on Father's day.

I know, I know; now comes the remark about sleeping with my daughter/dog/gerbil/hamster/wall clock, whichever. Flame away.

Remarkably similar to my experience. For me it was hearing that Great Bertha from Skull & Roses on the FM radio at work one day - I bought the disc that afternoon and found the archive soon after (this happened in late 2006 I think).

My 'deadhead' went dormant in the late '80s I suppose - the few shows I went to were OK but it seemed the band had thrown in the towel and the crowds were different. I pretty much stopped listening to them altogether and was listening to Johnny Winter, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bow Wow Wow, B52s etc

"Remarkably similar to my experience."

Hmmm...WTF? All I can recall from SDH's post is somethin about hamster sex, and then this is your first line?

Well, okay...seriously, I'd say that it was always there in my core (deep love of the DEAD, not hamsters), though like many, when I dropped out in 82, til 95, I still listened regularly to albums of old...then, when I put JG and MtnG on my door at work--the photo we've talked about so often [below], I came out of the closet and students/colleagues started giving me posters and memorabileia (like that sp?) and I was always proud to ackn them...then, since arriving here, my interest level has EXPLODED.

Like a gerbil on a feeding binge at SDH's compound...

My first show was in 1973. I was very sick, very high and I fell asleep. I thought "I feel bad but I just don't get it... " Next night went back and fell in love.
Europe 72' was my High School movie soundtrack. This was a great time to get into the band. I sent them a newspaper clip , an LA columnist was bashing the Dead for their "ridiculous" wall of sound. The mailed response was such a wonderful surprise. A lovely note of thanks with some 45's, pressings of Jerry's 2nd album, Seastones from Phil and Ned and Hunter's first album.
As the Boys got into it more and more, I began to find my own trip. Also the wear and tear on the Band showed. My last Dead show was at San Berdoo in '77? With the return of Mickey I continued to catch Jerry solo in Santa Cruz and SF. As time passed I marveled at their "endurance"... and have always respected what they aspired to and accomplished. For years I was jealous for not being a member of the Band... When Jerry passed, other than listening to the albums, I'd pretty much lost track. Went to the Park for the sad beautiful farewell/celebration (went to a Wharf Rat gathering) and was amazed at the depth of feelings I had. In recent years, I listen to lots of the music that the older Guys and Gals dug, and heard Shady Grove with Dawg. That was the Jerry that I want to remember. AND I will always love the Gang for their own trip... Read Scrib's book. I cried my eyes out re-reading what Bobby D. said about Jerry. I will ALWAYS be a proud and grateful Deadhead!

Hey , that's me! I'm Bobby D. > Scrib's ? What book ? What page ? I couldn't even think about the band or the shows , I had cherished until 20 years after Jerry passed . So , now I listen to my 1,000 bootlegs on special occasions , and sometimes , I'll reference somethings on the internet like Youtube. Still proud , still grateful , still Dead to the core ! PEACE OUT .

I also have to say it's TRUE.

I know people who dropped out of the scene, for one reason or another, but 20 + years later they still have a deep association with the music.

Others, so to say, temporarily quit being deadheads, to follow career plans / new social connections etc. Most have since realized that they can be sucessful professionals and deadheads at the same time.

I think if you were/are a genuine deadhead it'll always be part of you.

not only true - I thought (just like blow me) it was another (although never posted here) ducat original - I've been saying that for 25 yrs - it is absolutely true - I'm not even going to read any responses to your post - anybody who "thinks" he/she was once a deadhead but is no more is mistaken about their ever being one.

I never seen a more asinine question.

What the fuck ?

The band stopped like 15 years ago. Bobby and I are fuckin' most your daughters just to prove "there is a generation gap" and its protruding through her hemp skirt, swollen as a beaver dam on an icy morning.

So be sure to remember this head was been in great grandma, grandma, mama, and your 18 year old baby. I can't wait for the next round and your stupid ass, deadhead.

Chris, based on what has transpired here over the past week or so, its very unfortunate that you chose this time to attack mcgannahan. He has been a long time valueable contributor here, he has never done anything to you and your response in this thread is completely uncalled for!

Under the current circumstances, I shouldnt be the one to have to point this out to you. Your recent behavior here has been excellent, perhaps better than mine. I have been surprised lately, by your ability to engage in music discussion here. Couldnt you please continue to do so?

FUCK OFF

I'm telling you cliff, straight from the Nobody Bus and after that Obama Bull Shit "Me as your Commander & Chief". What a military mind, once eased Medical Pot issues for the users he opened it up for the growers and more criminal activity w/o providing any type regulations or legislation.

What a cluster-fuck crew in the white house.

Chris, I have to agree with Cliff, except I am not surprised at all by your recent discussion of the music. I was already aware of your knowledge on that subject.

I must say I was surprised, and impressed by the civility Cliff displayed.

"FUCK OFF"

Hey Cliff gets that all the time, sometime with just cause. I'm not sure it was appropriate this time.

"THIS SHIT IS ON !"

This would seem to indicate there is soon to be a recurrence of the infamous "Chris/Cliff Conflict". May I say I hope that does not occur. The recent lull in negativity here has been quite pleasant.

Chris I know I have just set myself up for an retaliatory salvo. And I think I can withstand same. If not, I may be forced to retreat to my "safe camp".

Photobucket

Peace to all who assemble here.

false...i got into them in high school, during the 'touch' phase...many others in my school did as well, but once the swell of popularity died, so did the 'love' of the music for many of them

me, much to the detriment of my social and financial well being, not so much

Damn--wish it were (well, the "skinny" part anyhow!)...saw "hello!" to Livermore for me; used to bike down there from up in Orinda area, through Tassjara (sp?) and such...great fun, but a long haul (could get it up to 50 mi if we meandered along those various backroads).
